Our Senior Team
Kevin Shapland set up Media Outcomes in 2002, after a successful
career in the Metropolitan Police Service, during which he worked for the National Criminal Intelligence Service, the Racial and Violent Crime Task Force, the Flying Squad and the Force Intelligence and Surveillance Unit, becoming involved in a number of high-profile investigations.
During the latter part of his police career, Kevin moved into marketing and PR, project-managing a number of successful, award-winning campaigns aimed at helping the Met to reach out to a variety of different audiences.
Having identified a gap in the ability of police forces to engage with their diverse range of stakeholders on a proactive basis, Kevin created Media Outcomes to help to fill that void, by building and improving relationships between the criminal justice sector, the media and the public. He has also pioneered and facilitated the Met’s successful approach to income-generation and public/private partnerships.
In addition, Kevin has provided consultancy support for BBC Factuals/documentaries, Drama and Entertainment, London Weekend Television, Granada Media, Wordwave, the Community and District Nursing Association and Geoff Howe Independent Marketing Communications Agency. He has also helped to formulate national guidelines in relation to the interaction between investigative journalism and law enforcement.
In his spare time, he sits on the board of Northamptonshire Crime Stoppers and is a Governor of his local school.
Derek Plews joined Media Outcomes in September, 2006 after a career in journalism and latterly in the Home Civil Service, where he was a member of the Government Communications Network, and most recently the Director of Communications at the Department for Communities and Local Government (formerly the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister).
Derek began his working life as a journalist in Northern Ireland in 1976, covering some of the biggest stories of “The Troubles” for the Londonderry Sentinel and then the Belfast Telegraph newspapers before joining the civil service (Government Information Service) in 1985.
He worked for the Ministry of Defence (including a posting to the Staff of the Senior Naval Officer Middle East for the duration of the first Gulf War) before moving on to the Department of Employment, where he was the Chief Press Officer and Head of News. Appointed to be Deputy Director of Communications at the Department of Transport in 1994, he was closely involved in the privatisation of the railway industry and other key transport policy issues before becoming Press Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister in 1997. He acted as Director of Communications at the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions until 2001, when he moved briefly to take on the role of Director of Communications at the Association of Train Operating Companies. This was followed by his appointment as Director of News at the Ministry of Defence, and, in 2002 he became Director of Communications at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
